A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.
