At least 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.
Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. Over 80 suspects were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives said.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.
State officials confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Resident Accounts
Community members have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.
Operation Background
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
