Champions League Fixtures This Evening: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games

Greetings to another night of exciting Champions League soccer. 9 games are scheduled for this evening, featuring three English teams in play. Chelsea take on Barça in the marquee match of the evening, whilst Newcastle visit Marseille and Manchester City welcome Leverkusen.

Group Rankings

We're at the halfway stage of the league stage, so the standings is taking form. All six British teams are currently in the top 12, but there are only two pts between 5th and 16th place, thus there's a whiff of volatility about the whole thing. All remains open.

  • Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (5.45pm)

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging superstar from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil lead at the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although The Magpies arrived in the French south coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home Premier League win over Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their only on the road win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

Not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the psychological aspect of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is different to Premier League games,” said the manager, whose side are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a possible twelve and automatic qualification to the last 16 nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Maradona is on duty for that.
