The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
