Her Royal Highness's Yearly Christmas Service of Carols Honours Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The sizable congregation will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Centred Around Compassion and Love
The theme of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a terminally ill child.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Performance and Potential
Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the concert.
"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.
A Sisterly Duo
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
