Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
