Investigation Reveals More Than Four-Fifths of Natural Medicine Books on Amazon Probably Produced by AI

A recent study has exposed that AI-generated content has saturated the herbalism book section on Amazon, including items promoting memory-enhancing gingko extracts, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and citrus-based wellness chews.

Alarming Numbers from Automation Identification Investigation

Based on analyzing numerous titles made available in Amazon's herbal remedies category from the initial nine months of 2024, researchers concluded that 82% appeared to be written by AI.

"This represents a troubling disclosure of the sheer scope of unmarked, unconfirmed, unregulated, likely artificially generated material that has extensively infiltrated Amazon's ecosystem," stated the analysis's main contributor.

Professional Apprehensions About Artificially Produced Health Guidance

"There is a substantial volume of alternative medicine information out there right now that's completely worthless," stated a medical herbalist. "Artificial intelligence won't know how to sift through the worthless material, all the nonsense, that's completely irrelevant. It could misguide consumers."

One of the seemingly AI-created books, Natural Healing Handbook, currently holds the No 1 bestseller in the platform's skin care, essential oil treatments and natural medicines categories. The book's opening markets the volume as "a resource for personal confidence", encouraging consumers to "turn inward" for remedies.

Questionable Creator Credentials

The writer is named as Luna Filby, whose platform profile presents her as a "thirty-five year old natural medicine practitioner from the beachside location of an Australian coastal town" and founder of the brand My Harmony Herb. However, no trace of the author, the company, or related organizations seem to possess any internet existence apart from the platform listing for the publication.

Detecting Automatically Created Content

Investigation noted numerous indicators that indicate likely automatically created herbalism material, including:

  • Extensive utilization of the nature icon
  • Plant-related creator pseudonyms like Botanical terms, Plant references, and Spice names
  • Mentions to questionable alternative healers who have promoted unsupported treatments for serious conditions

Larger Pattern of Unverified AI Content

These publications constitute an expanding phenomenon of unverified automated text being sold on the marketplace. Previously, wild mushroom collectors were warned to avoid wild plant identification publications sold on the platform, apparently authored by chatbots and featuring unreliable guidance on identifying lethal fungus from safe ones.

Requests for Control and Identification

Industry officials have requested Amazon to begin identifying automatically produced text. "Any book that is fully AI-generated should be labeled as AI-generated and automated garbage needs to be eliminated as an immediate concern."

Reacting, the company declared: "We have content guidelines governing which publications can be made available for purchase, and we have active and responsive methods that assist in identifying text that contravenes our standards, regardless of whether automatically produced or different. We invest considerable effort and assets to ensure our requirements are complied with, and take down titles that do not conform to those guidelines."
