Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United After Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined the Championship side just seven months following instigating insulting chants directed at their manager, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club after departing from Leeds United, has put pen to paper on a agreement joining the Championship strugglers through the winter. His seven-year time with Leeds concluded amicably in August.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player involved leading offensive songs about Chris Wilder during Leeds' promotion party in April. Currently, the former England player is set to play under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to lift his beloved club away from the bottom places.
Past History Between Bamford and the Manager
Both men had a past prior to Leeds moved up to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured automatic promotion whereas Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Reconciliation and Looking Ahead
All seems to have been resolved with Sheffield United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost in attack and Bamford looking to revive his playing days.
The song about Wilder gained traction this spring. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder stated at the time: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I have no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow pro! However I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I spoke to Daniel too and had a longer discussion with him and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we would dish it out and take it and that is an integral part of the game at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I've got no problem at all. I am cool with the situation and I told him that to Pat.”
