Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down Following Move Towards Chicken.

A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have reached pizza saturation while broadening the chain into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its governing body.

Leadership Transition

The former CEO is departing after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a long-term chief.

Rennie, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's largest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, stating earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted poultry was the quickest rising food category in the international market.

Board Friction

Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and business vision, although the company's release said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.

Recent Product Introduction

In September, the chain unveiled its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which Rennie described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it views chicken products as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to boost expansion and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing finding the right chief executive to direct the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”

Market Challenges

Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by 1.5% in the third quarter. In the summer, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in six-month income.

Rival chains are also facing challenges. Another major chain announced the closure of 68 restaurants a last month, after the business behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Wellness Efforts

Responding to consumer trends towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced reduced-calorie items, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and gluten-free options. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has 909 calories.

Acting Management

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm a well-known operator. It is believed that she prefers not to assume the CEO position long-term.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a several ongoing growth and operational projects that we will be concentrating on carrying out at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the organization's logistics network and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also in need of a permanent chief financial officer until 16 March, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow serves as acting financial officer.
