The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
