Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is about using it in the right way. Skill counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel mention appreciating the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, he has responded in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals instead of teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after showing that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. We all must support him and build a setting which he can use that intensity against rivals and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's game in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”
He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter setting up Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham committed but he will be watching him closely. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
