What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a dark entity, much like how Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
